From Proto-West Germanic *stanikōn, from Proto-Germanic *stanikōną, *stanukōną (“to make a sound repeatedly, pant”), equivalent to stenan + -cian. Cognate with Old Norse stanka (whence Swedish stånka (“to pant”), Scots stank, stunk (“to breathe heavy, pant”)).
