Finnish

Etymology

Possibly syvä + -nto. While this would require a seemingly irregular shift from front into back vowels, the front-vowel variant syväntö is also attested in dialects. Alternatively, possibly borrowed from Sami, from Proto-Samic *sovōn.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsuʋɑnto/, [ˈs̠uʋɑ̝n̪t̪o̞]
  • Rhymes: -uʋɑnto
  • Syllabification(key): su‧van‧to
  • Hyphenation(key): su‧van‧to

Noun

suvanto

  1. stream pool (stretch of a river or stream in which the water depth is above average and the water velocity is quite below average)
  2. (figuratively) A slow section in anything that might be understood as a stream, e.g. in musical composition, history, life of a person, project etc.
