From Old Danish swet, from Proto-Germanic *swaitaz, cognate with Swedish svett, Dutch zweet, German Schweiß, English sweat. A different derivation in Western Old Norse sveiti, Norwegian Bokmål svette and Norwegian Nynorsk sveitte from *swaitô.
