From Old Cornish teilu, from Proto-Brythonic *teɣlʉɣ, from Proto-Celtic *tegoslougom, from Proto-Celtic *tegos (“house”) + Proto-Celtic *slougos (“troup, army”), equivalent to chi + lu. Compare Irish and Scottish Gaelic teaghlach, Manx lught thie, and Welsh teulu.
