From Middle Cornish troys, from Old Cornish truit, from Proto-Brythonic *traɣed, from Proto-Celtic *tregess, from Proto-Indo-European *tregʰ- (“to run, walk”), apparently a variant of *dʰregʰ- (“to run”). Cognate with Breton troad, Irish and Scottish Gaelic troigh, Manx trie, and Welsh troed.
