French

Etymology

Borrowed from Italian volteggiare.

Pronunciation

Verb

voltiger

  1. (intransitive) to flit, flutter
  2. (figurative) to flit about (a place) (en), flutter about (a place)
  3. (figurative) to get kicked out, chucked out
  4. (Louisiana) to fly, to take a plane

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written voltige- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
