From Dutch weemoed, from Middle Dutch weemoede (“deep sadness”), backformation from weemoedich. The semantic development was later influenced by German Wehmut, from Middle Low German wēmōt. Analysable as wee (“pain, woe, sadness”) + moed (“mood”).
