From Middle English ȝode, ȝede, eode, from Old English ēode, from Proto-Germanic *ijj-, a suppletive past tense form to Proto-Germanic *gāną (“to go”), and further from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ey- (“go”). Cognate with Latin eō (“go”), Russian идти (idti, “go”).
