William Gregor

Vilhelmo Justino Gregorio (1761-1817) estis angla pastro, kemiisto kaj mineralogo, kiu malkovris la kemian elementon titanon. En 1791, dum li studis la mineralon "ilmeniton" el la Manakanaj valoj, li izolis la kalcinaĵojn de nekonata metalo, kiun li nomis "manakanito". Pli malfrue, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, malkovris tion, kio nun estas konata kiel Titano en la mineralo "rutilo"^[1]. Kredante ke li estis trovinta novan elementon, Klaproth nomis ĝin Titano, omaĝe al la Titanoj de la greka mitologio, sed eventuale eksplikiĝis ke Gregor unue faris la malkovron. Al Gregor atribuiĝis la malkovro, tamen, la elemento konservis la nomon elektitan de Klaproth.
