Del inglés medio firre, del inglés antiguo fyrh, furh (como en furhwudu ('abeto'),[2] del protogermánico occidental *furhu, del protogermánico *furhō[3], *furhijǭ, del protoindoeuropeo *pr̥kʷ-, grado cero de *perkʷu- ('roble'). Compárese el alemán Föhre, el danés fyr o el noruego y sueco fura.
