Hameln on keskisuuri kaupunki Ala-Saksin osavaltiossa, luoteisessa Saksassa. Se sijaitsee lounaiseen Hannoverista ja toimii Hameln-Pyrmontin piirikunnan pääkaupunkina. Noin 59 000 asukkaan kaupunki tunnetaan ennen kaikkea sinne 1200-luvulla sijoittuvasta saksalaisesta kansansadusta Hamelnin pillipiipari. [2]

Varhaisin maininta Hamelnista kaupunkina on peräisin vuoden 1200 tienoilta. Vuodesta 1426 vuoteen 1572 kaupunki oli Hansaliiton jäsen. Uskonpuhdistus saapui kaupunkiin vuonna 1540. Kolmikymmenvuotisessa sodassa kaupungin lähistöllä käytiin taisteluita. Vuonna 1664 alkoi Hamelnin vaurauden kausi, kun siitä muodostui Braunschweig-Calenbergin herttuakunnan linnoitettu rajakaupunki. Vuonna 1867 kaupungista tuli osa Preussia.[3]
Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen Hamelnissa sijaitsi brittiläisten miehitysjoukkojen hallinnoima vankila. Vankilassa hirtettiin yli 200 ihmistä, muun muassa Irma Grese ja Josef Kramer.[4]
