La Brean tervahaudat on fossiilialue Kaliforniassa, keskellä Los Angelesia. La Brean tervahautojen ”terva” on erityisen paksua maaöljyä, joka nousee maan pinnalle maanalaisesta öljyesiintymästä. Tuhansia eläimiä ja kasveja on jäänyt ansaan La Brean paksuun öljyyn 40 000–8 000 vuoden välisenä aikana. Ne ovat takertuneet kiinni maaöljyyn ja sen jälkeen vajonneet sen sisään. Niiden upottua öljyyn öljypitoiset sedimentit ovat säilyttäneet eläinten luut ja kasvien osat täydellisesti.[1]

Tervahaudat ovat muodostuneet maaöljystä joka nousee ylös maanpinnalle kallioperässä olevien halkeamien kautta. Kun öljy on pinnalla niin siitä haihtuvat kevyemmät ainekset jättäen jäljelle raskaimman tervan tai asfaltin. Alueen alkuperäiset asukkaat käyttivät sitä kanoottien ja korien tiivistämiseen sekä liimana. Kun länsimaalaiset saapuivat alueelle, tervaa kerättiin kuopista ja käytettiin lähistön talojen kattojen tiivistykseen.[1]
Tässä yhteydessä löydettiin luita ja niiden ajateltiin joutuneen sinne kun karjaa oli eksynyt kuoppiin.[1] Kiinnostus kaivauksiin heräsi kuitenkin 1900-luvun vaihteessa kun löytyi sukupuuttoon kuolleen jättiläislaiskiaisen jäänteet.[2] Vuonna 1901 tehtiin ensimmäinen arkeologinen kaivaus. Tuhansia eläimiä ja kasveja on jäänyt ansaan La Brean paksuun öljyyn 40 000–8 000 vuoden välisenä aikana. Ne ovat takertuneet kiinni maaöljyyn kiinni ja sen jälkeen vajonneet sen sisään. Niiden upottua öljyyn öljypitoiset sedimentit ovat säilyttäneet eläinten luut ja kasvien osat täydellisesti.[1] Öljy on säilönyt luut hyvin koska se esti hapen vaikutuksen niihin.[3] Luut eivät ole siis kivettyneet mutta niitä kutsutaan fossiileiksi koska ne ovat yli 10 000 vuotta vanhoja.[4] Kaikkiaan yli 660 eliölajia on löydetty tervahaudoista.[1]
Alueen öljy on hyvin tahmeaa ja sen viskositeetti on korkea eli se on jähmeästi virtaavaa. Siitä syistä siihen on jäänyt kiinni suuriakin eläimiä kuten mammutteja ja biisoneja.[5] Tällaisten suurten eläinten kiinni jääminen on houkutellut paikalle petoja ja raadonsyöjiä, jotka ovat puolestaan jääneet kiinni öljyyn. Öljystä onkin löytynyt paljon enemmän petoja. Noin 90 prosenttia eläimistä on lihansyöjiä.[1] Ihmisiä on haudoista löytynyt vain yksi, mutta ihmisten valmistamia esineitä sen sijaan on löydetty runsaasti. Öljystä on kaivettu esiin myös sammakkoeläimiä, matelijoita, lintuja, hyönteisiä ja muita selkärangattomia sekä kasveja.[5]
Kaivaukset jatkuvat edelleen tervahaudassa numero 91, muut haudat on kaivettu tyhjiksi.[6][7] Fossiilien säilyttämistä varten Los Angelesiin on avattu George C. Page Museum, jossa vierailivat voivat tutustua löytöihin.[8] Museo on osa Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County museota.[1]
