Varhaisin tunnettu kirjallinen maininta Lingenistä on peräisin vuodelta 975. Sille myönnettiin kaupunginoikeudet 1300-luvulla. Lingenin nähtävyyksiin lukeutuu muun muassa Marktplatz, jonka laidalla sijaitsee 1500-luvulta peräisin oleva raatihuone. Kaupungin edustavimpiin kirkkorakennuksiin lukeutuu evankelis-luterilainen Kreuzkirche, joka on peräisin 1700-luvulta.
Lingenissä järjestetään joka vuosi isot kouluratsastuskilpailut.[2]
