Skien on kaupunki Telemarkin läänissä, Norjassa. Skien on Telemarkin läänin hallinnollinen keskus. Kunnassa oli vuoden 2023 alussa 55 924 asukasta ja sen maapinta-ala oli 719 neliökilometriä.[1]
Kirjailija Henrik Ibsen syntyi Skienissä.[2]
Skien sijaitsee Skienselva-joen varrella. Sieltä lähtee Norjan pisin kanava, 105 km pitkä Telemarkin kanava, joka kulkee Daleniin asti.[2]
Käytännössä Skienin kaupungin keskustaajama on kasvanut yhteen naapurikaupunki Porsgrunnin keskustaajaman kanssa ja tämä taajama jatkuu edelleen myös Bamblen puolelle. Norjan tilastokeskus luokitteleekin nämä yhdeksi taajamaksi, jonka asukasluku oli vuoden 2021 alussa yhteensä 94 102.[3]
Skien on luultavasti perustettu alkujaan kauppapaikaksi ja satamaksi. Varhaisimmat asutuksen merkit ovat peräisin 900-luvulta, joten Skien on yksi vanhimmista kaupunkimaisista asutuspaikoista Norjassa. Tanskan kuningas myönsi Skienille kaupunkioikeudet vuonna 1358.
Kaupungin varhaisin tunnettu nimi on Skida. Vuonna 1359 kirjoitusasu muuttui muotoon Skyde. Vuonna 1468 kaupungista alettiin käyttää nimeä Skydebye ja vuonna 1662 nimi muuttui muotoon Scheen. Paikalliset asukkaat lausuvat edelleen Skienin nimen "She-en".
Vuonna 1964 maalaiskunnat Solum ja Gjerpen liitettiin Skieniin.
Skienissä ilmestyvät sanomalehdet Varden ja Telemarksavisa.
