Selon le Bureau du recensement des États-Unis, la municipalité s'étend en 2010 sur une superficie de 1,89 mille carré (4,9 km2)[1].
La localité est fondée en 1890 sous le nom de Sunset. Elle est par la suite renommée en l'honneur de William Garland, constructeur du canal approvisionnant le bourg et industriel local[2]. L'industrie sucrière domine longtemps l'économie de Garland, qui accueille la Utah Sugar Company de 1871 à 1977[3].
La bibliothèque Carnegie de Garland, construite en 1914, est inscrite au Registre national des lieux historiques[4].
