(Adjectif, forme de verbe 1) Du vieil anglais worhte, forme du passé de wyrcan, celui-ci étant devenu work.

(Forme de verbe 2) Par la confusion entre wreak havoc et work havoc. Cette forme dénote une supplétion car son étymologie est distincte de celle de wreak.
