A mitoloxía finlandesa é a que comprende as crenzas dos pobos fineses antes da súa cristianización. Posuía moitas características comúns co pobo veciño máis emparentado desde o punto de vista étnico e lingüístico, os estonianos, así como cos veciños non urálicos, é dicir, os pobos bálticos e escandinavos. Moitos destes mitos estaban tamén estreitamente relacionados con outros pobos urálicos, como os saamis.
A mitoloxía finesa sobreviviu en forma de tradicións orais de poemas cantados míticos e folclore até ben entrado o século XIX.
O deus pai Ukko (ancián en finés), era orixinalmente só un espírito da Natureza como todos os outros, mais a influencia progresiva das culturas circundantes derivou na ascensión deste ao ceo. O animal sacro, cuxo nome non se pronunciaba en voz alta, era o oso. O oso era visto como a encarnación dos antepasados, e era denominado con moitos eufemismos: mesikämmen (pata de mel), otso (fronte ampla), kontio (habitante da terra).
A primeira mención das crenzas do pobo finés foi feita polo bispo e reformador luterano Mikael Agricola no prefacio da súa tradución ao finés dos salmos.[1] Agricola suplantou unha lista de deidades supostas de Häme (en sueco Tavastia) e Karelia, doce deidades de cada rexión,[1][2] coas súas supostas funcións brevemente expostas en forma de versos.[1][3] Algúns comentaristas establecen que só once deidades foron listadas para Häme,[4] non contando entre elas a mención de Piru, o Diabo. Grazas a estas listas, Agricola é considerado o pai da historia relixiosa de Finlandia e a súa mitoloxía.[1][5] Eruditos e estudantes posteriores frecuentemente citarían as listas de Agricola como fontes históricas, só a finais do século XIX comezaron os eruditos a avaliar criticamente os deuses da lista de Agricola e a información presentada sobre eles,[6] determinándose con investigacións posteriores que a maioría das figuras presentadas por el non eran deuses, senón espíritos gardiáns locais, figuras da mitoloxía popular ou lendas explanatorias, heroes culturais, santos cristiáns baixo nomes alternativos, e nun caso, un festival da época da colleita.[4]
A obra de Cristfried Ganander Mythologia Fennica, publicada en 1789, foi a primeira incursión erudita laica na mitoloxía finesa. No século XIX, as investigacións sobre o folclore finés intensificáronse. Eruditos como Elias Lönnrot, J.F. Cajan, M.A. Castrén e D.E.D Europaues, viaxaron arredor de Finlandia escribindo a poesía popular cantada. A partir deste material Lönnrot editou o Kalevala como tamén o Kanteletar. Esta poesía popular recollida no século XIX constaba preponderantemente as crenzas pagás finesas previas á cristianización, e permitiulle aos eruditos estudar a mitoloxía finesa con máis detalle.

Críase que o mundo fora formado a partir da explosión dun ovo de Aythya (ave acuática). Respecto ao ceo críase que se trataba da cuberta superior do ovo e, alternativamente era visto como unha carpa, que estaba soportado por unha columna no Polo Norte, por debaixo da Estrela do Norte.
O movemento das estrelas era explicado como causa da rotación da bóveda celeste sobre a Estrela do Norte e sobre si mesma. Segundo a mitoloxía, un gran remuíño fora causado no Polo Norte debido á rotación da columna do ceo. Por medio deste remuíño, as almas podían ir á parte exterior do mundo á terra dos mortos, a Tuonela.
Críase que a terra era plana. Nos bordos da Terra estaba Luntukoto (o fogar dos paxaros), unha rexión cálida onde habitaban os paxaros durante o inverno. A Vía Láctea era chamada Linnunrata (a ruta dos paxaros), porque se cría que os paxaros viaxaban ao longo dela cara a Lintutoko e de volta.
Os paxaros posuían tamén outro significado, levaban a súa alma aos humanos no momento do nacemento, e recollíanlla no momento da morte. Nalgunhas áreas, crían que era necesario ter unha figura dun paxaro tallada en madeira para previr que a alma escapase durante o soño. Estas figuras recibían o nome de Sielulintut (paxaros da alma) e protexían a alma de perderse nos camiños dos soños.
Á súa vez, as aves acuáticas eran moi comúns nos contos, como tamén nas pinturas en pedras e cavernas, demostrando o importante significado que tiñan estas para os antigos fineses.
Tuonella era a terra dos mortos. Era un fogar ou cidade subterránea para todos os mortos. Era un sitio escuro e exánime, no que ninguén durmía nunca. Só un valente xamán podía viaxar a Tuonela en estado de transo para consultar a guía dos antepasados. Para viaxar a Tuonela, a alma debía cruzar o escuro río desta. Se tiña unha razón válida, entón un barco viría a recollelo. Moitas veces a alma do xamán debía convencer os gardas de Tuonela de que el realmente estaba morto.
Ukko (home ancián) era o deus do ceo, o tempo meteorolóxico e os cultivos. Tamén era o máis importante deus do panteón e as palabras finesas ukkonen (trono, literalmente "de Ukko") ou "ukonilma" (tempo de Ukko) derivan do seu nome. No Kalevala é tamén chamado Ylijumala (deus superior), dado que era o deus do ceo. Nos mitos, figura só manifestándose por efectos naturais cando é invocado.
As orixes de Ukko poderían datar de Perkūnas, deus da mitoloxía báltica, o do antigo deus do ceo finés Ilmarinen. Tamén Thor é asociado a Perkūnas. Cando Ukko tomou o posto de Ilmarinen de deus do ceo, o destino de Ilmarinen foi converterse en deus ferreiro, ou deus da pedra. No Kalevala, atribúeselle a Ilmarinen a forxa das estrelas da bóveda celeste e o máxico muíño da abundancia, o Sampo.
A arma de Ukko podía ser un martelo, unha machada ou unha espada, coa cal lanzaba raios. Críase que creara as tormentas eléctricas ao conducir co seu carro sobre as nubes ou ben ao manter relacións sexuais coa súa esposa Akka (en finés anciá). A arma orixinal de Ukko era posiblemente a machada de pedra gravada en barcos da cultura de machada de guerra. O martelo de Ukko, Ukkon vasara (o seu nome en finés significa o mesmo que en galego), significaba posiblemente o mesmo que a machada de pedra tallada nos barcos. Dado que as ferramentas de pedra foron abandonadas na Idade de Cobre nórdica as orixes das armas de pedra constitúen un misterio. Críase que estas eran as armas de Ukko, cabezas de pedras que producían alustros. Os xamáns recolleron e mantiveron estas armas posto que crían que posuían moitos poderes tanto para a curación como para o dano.
