Sejak debut profesionalnya pada tahun 1990, ia telah tampil dalam peran utama beberapa opera di New York Metropolitan Opera, London Opera House, Opera Wina State, Milan La Scala, dan banyak gedung opera lainnya di Eropa dan Amerika Serikat. Dia memiliki diskografi yang substansial terutama dengan EMI Classics dan Decca dan terkenal karena penampilannya di opera Puccini.

Pada tahun 1996, Elena meninggal dalam kecelakaan mobil.^[2] Orang tuanya kemudian berpisah dan ayahnya menjadi seorang biarawan, tinggal di sebuah biara di Gunung Athos. Empat tahun kemudian, setelah suami ahli bedah Elena, Andrei Dan, meninggal, ia mengadopsi putri mereka, Ioana,^[3] yang belajar di University of Kent dan telah tinggal di London sejak itu. Dia memutuskan untuk tidak memiliki anak sendiri karena takut kemungkinan perubahan suara setelah kehamilan dan bahwa membesarkan Ioana sudah merupakan pengalaman yang memuaskan baginya.
