Mercury Prize

Mercury Prize, atau biasa disebut Mercury Music Prize dan saat ini dikenal sebagai Barclaycard Mercury Prize, adalah ajang penghargaan musik tahunan untuk album terbaik dari Inggris dan Irlandia. Dibuat oleh British Phonographic Industry dan British Association of Record Dealers pada tahun 1992 sebagai alternatif Brit Awards. Semula hadiah disponsori oleh Mercury Communications, sebuah merek yang dimiliki Cable & Wireless,^[1] namun kemudian disponsori oleh Technics^[2] (1998 hingga 2001), Panasonic^[1] (2002 dan 2003), dan Nationwide Building Society (2004 hingga 2008). Saat ini Barclaycard menjadi sponsor utama sejak Maret 2009.^[3]

Album mana pun yang dirilis oleh artis Inggris atau Irlandia, atau oleh grup musik yang anggotanya terdiri dari 50% warga Inggris atau Irlandia, dapat dikirimkan untuk pertimbangan. Daftar dipilih oleh juri independen, presenter musik, produser musik, jurnalis musik, penyelenggara festival dan pihak lain dalam industri musik di Inggris dan Irlandia.^[4][5][6] Hadiah ini terbuka untuk semua jenis musik, meliputi pop, rock, folk, urban, dance, jazz, blues, elektronika, dan klasik. Penyampaian hadiah biasanya dilaksanakan dalam Awards Show pada bulan Oktober. Setiap artis yang masuk daftar akan menerima komisi spesial trofi Album of The Year pada Awards Show. Berbeda dengan beberapa ajang penghargaan musik lainnya, semua pemenang Mercury Prize akan mendapatkan cek; senilai £20,000 (2014). Pemenang juga akan menerima trofi pemenang tambahan.^[7]

Hingga saat ini,PJ Harvey adalah satu-satunya artis yang memenangi penghargaan lebih dari satu kali (pada 2001 dan 2011). Dia juga artis solo wanita pertama yang menerima pengharagaan dan menyamai Radiohead sebagai artis paling sering masuk daftar, meskipun Radiohead tidak pernah memenangkan hadiah.^[8]
