To Be Kind è il tredicesimo album in studio degli Swans, pubblicato il 12 maggio 2014 dalle etichette indipendenti Young God Records e Mute Records.
È stato reso disponibile nei formati digitale, triplo LP e doppio CD. Quest'ultimo formato è disponibile anche in edizione deluxe con incluso un DVD Live delle esibizioni ai festival Hellfest, Pitchfork Music Festival e Primavera Sound.[14][15][16]
Il 4 maggio è stato reso disponibile in anteprima l'intero album in streaming sul sito di National Public Radio.[17]

Le session sono iniziate nell'ottobre del 2013 da materiale sviluppato live durante il tour del 2012-2013, è prodotto da Michael Gira e registrato da John Congleton ai Sonic Ranch, a Tornillo, in Texas, 30 miglia da El Paso e al Congleton studio di Dallas.[18]
Ad anticipare l'uscita dell'album sono stati diffusi i brani A Little God In My Hands, 21 marzo 2013 tramite Soundcloud, e Oxygen il 15 aprile 2014 tramite il sito The Quietus.[19]
Tra gli ospiti figurano St. Vincent, Cold Specks, Little Annie e Bill Rieflin.[18][20]

Le sei versioni della copertina dell'album, rivelate il 21 marzo 2013, sono realizzate da Bob Biggs.[21]
Michael Gira afferma di aver conosciuto l'artista a Los Angeles tra il 1976 e il 1977 e di essere rimasto folgorato dalle sue opere:

«I was at the house of a friend (and a friend of Bob's), and I noticed an unfathomable image on the wall. It was a pastel of one of the baby images we are now using as the art for the new Swans album. An uncanny visual cipher, and it stuck with me, all these years... I look at Bob's baby images as something like the Mona Lisa—utterly inscrutable, but ACHING to reach up to the surface. Or like one of Jasper Johns' flag paintings—I just can't figure them out, but they keep calling me back. I recall asking Bob in 1981 or so if I could use one of those baby images for a record, and he said, definitively, NO. But those images have remained in the back of my head since then, always nagging. It seems they're always calling me, calling, calling... I'm delighted that these images, finally with Bob's consent, can now act as innocent, but implacable sentinels for the music of Swans, after all these years»

Un codice visuale indecifrabile che è rimasto intrappolato nella mia mente per tutti questi anni. Guardo queste immagini di bambini che Bob ha disegnato come se fossero la Monna Lisa, totalmente imperscrutabili ma con qualcosa di doloroso che tenta di uscire in superficie.
