Herbert Lawford ha battuto nella finale del torneo preliminare Ernest Renshaw per 6–2, 6–3, 2–6, 4–6, 6–4. Avrebbe dovuto sfidare nel Challenge Round il detentore del titolo e sei volte campione William Renshaw, il quale non ha potuto difenderlo a causa di un infortunio al gomito.^[1][2][3]
