ヨセフ・アガシ

ヨセフ・アガシ (ヘブライ語: יוסף אגסי、英: Joseph Agassi、1927年5月7日 – 2023年1月22日)^[1] は、現在のイスラエルに生まれた科学哲学者、科学史家。ヘブライ大学で物理学修士、ロンドン大学で哲学博士の学位を取得。ボストン大学教授などを経て、ヨーク大学名誉教授、テルアビブ大学名誉教授。

略歴

1927年、現在のイスラエル（当時は英国の委任統治領）生まれ。宗教的な家庭で育つが、やがてユダヤ教に疑問をもちはじめ、ラビ養成の宗教学校を退学し、物理学を学び始める。ヘブライ大学で1952年に物理学の修士号を取得した。その前年、カール・ポパーの論文「哲学的諸問題の性格と科学におけるその根源」を読んで感動したことをきっかけに、科学哲学の道に進むことを決心。ロンドン大学に進学してポパーに師事し、1956年に論文「物理学における解釈の機能」で哲学博士の学位を取得。1971年に刊行した『自然哲学者としてのファラデー』によって、科学史家としての地位を確立した。香港大学講師、イリノイ大学准教授、ボストン大学教授などを経て、ヨーク大学名誉教授、テルアビブ大学名誉教授。2023年、逝去。

1948年、ユディット（マルティン・ブーバーの孫娘）と結婚。長女ティルツァー、長男アーロンの2人の子がいる。アーロンが8歳のときに親子のあいだでかわされた対話を元にした『父が子に語る科学の話』は科学入門の定番書として名高く、英語版をはじめ、イタリア語版、ヘブライ語版、中国語版、日本語版など世界中で読まれている。
