Essentia est natura vel substantia cuiusdam entis. Quo nomine Sergius Plautus Stoicus exeunte saeculo primo a.C.n. notionem Aristoteliam q.e. οὐσία interpretatus est. De quo Quintilianus hoc testimonium dicit: "Ac primum Aristoteles elementa decem constituit, circa quae versari videatur omnis quaestio: οὐσίαν, quam Plautus essentiam vocat."[1] Sed iam Cicero, qui pro οὐσία naturam reddere solebat, etiam essentia usus esse dicitur, itemque Papirius Fabianus.[2]
Initio quidem essentia in dubium vocata esse videtur propter duritiam nimiam, ut Quintilianus prae se fert dubitatores admonens: "Multa ex Graeco formata nova, ac plurima a Sergio Plauto, quorum dura quaedam admodum videntur, ut ens et essentia: quae cur tanto opere aspernemur nihil video, nisi quod iniqui iudices adversus nos sumus: ideoque paupertate sermonis laboramus."[3] Etiam Senecae visum est hoc vocabulum defendere: "Quid enim fiet, mi Lucili? Quomodo dicetur οὐσία res necessaria, natura continens fundamentum omnium? Rogo itaque permittas mihi hoc verbo [sc. essentia] uti."[4] Saeculo fere post Apuleius essentiam receptam habet idemque significantem ac substantiam: "Οὐσίας quas essentias dicimus" [. . .] "et primae quidem substantiae vel essentiae primum deum esse et mentem formasque rerum et animam."[5]
Sed Laurentius Valla in Dialecticis disputationibus (1439) essentiae et substantiae usus distinctionem constituere voluit, "ne ambagibus sermo implicetur".[6] De essentia in Latinitatem medii aevi recepta disputavit de Ghellinck (1942). Apud Spinozam, "Per attributum intelligo id, quod intellectus de substantia percipit, tanquam eiusdem essentiam constituens.[7]
