Smėlynė – Vilniaus miesto dalis, esanti į šiaurės rytus nuo miesto centro, prie kelio 102 Vilnius–Švenčionys–Zarasai , netoli rytinio Neries kranto.[2] Per Smėlynę teka Kairos upelis. Šiaurėje ribojasi su Veržuva, pietryčiuose pereina į Gvazdikus. Rajoną supa pušynai (Aukštagirio miškas). Kolektyviniai sodai (Smėlynės bendrija).

Smėlynę aptarnauja 39 ir 17 maršrutų autobusai (Smėlynės stotelė).
Apie 1866 m. Smėlynės karčemoje gyveno 18 žmonių (8 katalikai, 10 žydų).[3] 1905 m. Mickūnų valsčiaus trijuose Smėlynės užusieniuose buvo 51 gyventojas,[4] 1931 m. Smėlynės užusienyje – 32.[5]
