Zemesragu veido krasta izvirzījums ar 88 m augsto Koževņikova klinti un nedaudz zemāko Vēbera klinti, starp kurām ir Severnajas līcis. Zemesragā izveidots vietējās nozīmes dabas piemineklis «Koževņikova rags», lai saglabātu reģiona lielāko valzirgu koloniju un leduslāču mītnes vietu.[2]
Sākotnēji nosaukumu zemesragam piešķīra angļu jūrasbraucējs Džeimss Kuks 1778. gadā, nodēvējot to par Nordkapu (Cape North — ‘Ziemeļu rags’) — tālāko vietu ziemeļos, ko izdevās sasniegt. Krieviski dēvēts par Severnija ragu, bet 1934. gadā pārdēvēts par godu polārpētniekam Oto Šmitam, kurš no Misšmitas polārstacijas vadīja tvaikoņa Čeļuskin glābšanas operāciju.[3]
Dienvidos no zemesraga atrodas sens čukču ciems Rirkaipija, bet dienvidaustrumos — daļēji pamestais Misšmitas pilsētciemats ar lidlauku. No 1932. līdz 1954. gadam zemesragā darbojās Misšmitas hidrometeoroloģiskā observatorija,[4] turpina darboties ģeofiziskā observatorija.[5]
