Oto Šmits (krievu: О́тто Ю́льевич Шмидт, Отто-Фридрихъ-Юліусъ Юльевичъ Шмидтъ; dzimis 1891. gada 30. septembrī Mohiļevā, miris 1956. gada 7. septembrī Maskavā) bija Krievijas Impērijas un PSRS zinātnieks, matemātiķis, ģeogrāfs, ģeofiziķis, astronoms. Pētījis Pamiru un Arktiku. Maskavas Universitātes profesors (1923—1956), Ukrainas PSR Zinātņu akadēmijas (1934) un PSRS Zinātņu akadēmijas īstenais loceklis (1935), Padomju Savienības Varonis (1937).

Dzimis 1891. gadā Mahiļovā veikalnieka Jūlija Frīdriha Šmita un viņa sievas Annas, dzimušas Ērgles, ģimenē. Viņa vecāki bija izceļotāji no Latvijas.[1] Bērnību un jaunību daļēji pavadīja vectēva Trepes muižas pārvaldnieka Frīdriha Ērgļa mājās.[2]
Mācījās Mahiļovas vīriešu ģimnāzijā, tad 1901. gadā viņa vecāki pārcēlās uz Odesu, kur viņš mācījās Odesas 2. ģimāzijā, bet 1907. gadā pārcēlās uz Kijivu, kur viņš ar zelta medaļu pabeidza ģimnāziju (1909). Studēja matemātiku Kijivas Universitātē (1909—1913). 1916. gadā iznāca viņa monogrāfija "Abstraktā grupu teorija" (Абстрактная теория групп), un viņš tika pieņemts darbā par privātdocentu Kijivas Universitātē.
Pēc Oktobra revolūcijas O. Šmits strādāja vairākos amatos Padomju Krievijas Izglītības Tautas komisariātā, bija Apgādības TK kolēģijas loceklis. 1918. gadā iestājās Krievijas sociālistiskajā strādnieku internacionālistu partijā, bija tās Centrālkomitejas loceklis. 1919. gadā kopā ar internacionālistu partiju tika iekļauts Krievijas Komunistiskajā (boļševiku) partijā.
No 1921. līdz 1924. gadam vadīja Valsts izdevniecību. No 1924. līdz 1941. gadam bija Lielās Padomju enciklopēdijas galvenais redaktors. 1928. gadā piedalījās padomju un vācu kopīgajā Pamira ekspedīcijā. 1929. gadā Šmits izveidoja Maskavas Valsts universitātes Augstākās algebras katedru, kuras vadītājs bija līdz 1949. gadam.. No 1932. līdz 1950. gadam bija žurnāla "Matemātikas krājums" (Математический сборник) galvenais redaktors. Vissavienības Arktikas institūta direktors (1930—1932), Ziemeļu jūrasceļa galvenās pārvaldes vadītājs (1932—1938). No 1930. līdz 1934. gadam Šmits vadīja arktiskās ekspedīcijas ar kuģiem "Georgij Sedov", "Aļeksandr Sibirjakov" un "Čeļuskin"
Lielā terora laikā pret O. Šmitu gatavoja apsūdzību, tomēr viņš netika apcietināts.[3] No 1939. gada 28. februāra līdz 1942. gada 24. martam PSRS Zinātņu akadēmijas viceprezidents. 1942. gadā atlaists no amata ZA vadībā, pievērsās akadēmiskajam darbam. 1944. gadā publicēja rakstu "Zemes un planētu izcelsmes meteorītu teorija" (Метеоритная теория происхождения Земли и планет) par planētu veidošanos no rotējošiem gāzu mākoņiem, 1949. gadā tika izdotas viņa "Četras lekcijas par Zemes izcelšanos" (Четыре лекции о теории происхождения Земли).
Miris 1956. gada 7. septembrī Maskavā, apglabāts Novodevičjes kapsētā.
