വിക്ടോറിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ബുദ്ധിപരമായി സജീവമായ ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് തത്ത്വചിന്തകനും സാമൂഹ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനുമായിരുന്നു ഹെർബർട്ട് സ്പെൻസർ. പരിണാമ സിദ്ധാന്തത്തിനുവേണ്ടിയും ബയോളജി തത്ത്വചിന്ത, മനശാസ്ത്രം, സാമൂഹ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിനകത്ത് എന്നീ മേഖലകളിലേക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം സംഭാവന ചെയ്തിരുന്നു "ഫെറ്റസ്റ്ററിന്റെ അതിജീവനം" എന്ന പദം അദ്ദേഹം ഉപയോഗിച്ചു. ചാൾസ് ഡാർവിന്റെ ഓൺ ദി ഒറിജിൻ ഓഫ് സ്പീഷീസ് വായിച്ചതിന് ശേഷമാണ് സ്പെൻസർ "സർവൈവൽ ഓഫ് ദ ഫിറ്റസ്റ്റ്" എന്ന പദപ്രയോഗം ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ഈ പദം സ്വാഭാവിക തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനെ ശക്തമായി സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും സ്പെൻസർ പരിണാമം സാമൂഹ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെയും നൈതികതയുടെയും മേഖലകളിലേക്ക് വ്യാപിക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടു. അതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹം ലാമാർക്കിസത്തെ പിന്തുണക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[1][2]
