Morkake (placenta) er eit organ som fosteret får næring frå hos dei aller fleste pattedyr. Nokre krypdyr og enkelte haiar har ein tilsvarande struktur, der plommesekken er i fysisk kontakt med livmorveggen og fungerer som ei morkake.[1][2]

Morkaken består av vev frå både embryo og mora. Navlestrengen blir utvikla og koplar embryoet til placenta. Dette sambandet har to arteriar og ei vene. Navlestrengarteriane forbind embryo til eit nettverk av blodårer som syter for tilførsel av oksygen og næringsstoff frå mora til fosteret, og avfallsstoff blir returnerte frå fosteret til mora gjennom vena.[3]
