Benny Powell

Benny Powell (1. mars 1930–26. juni 2010) var ein USA-amerikansk jazztrombonist. Han spelte både vanleg (tenor) trombone og basstrombone.^[1][2]

Powll kom frå New Orleans og byrja å spele profesjonelt då han var 14 år gammal. 18 år gammal spelte han med Lionel Hampton. I 1951 slutta han i bandet til Hampton og byrja å spele med Count Basie, der han var fram til 1963. Powell speler trombonesolo på mellomspelet på innspelinga til Basie frå 1955 av «April in Paris».^[3]

Etter Basie byrja han som frilansmusikar i New York City. Frå 1966 til 1970 var han medlem av Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, og spelte mandagskveldar på Village Vanguard. Han var òg i husbandet til Merv Griffin Show, og då showet flytta til Los Angeles i 1970, følgde Powell etter. Her arbeidde han mykje som studiomusikar, mellom anna for Abdullah Ibrahim, John Carter og Randy Weston. Seinare arbeidde Powell som lærar, særleg i Jazzmobile-prosjektet. Han flytta attende til New York i 1980-åra.

Han døydde på eit sjukehus på Manhattan, 80 år gammal, etter ein ryggoperasjon.
