Costello gav ut si fyrste plate i 1977. På dei fyrste platene var Costello påverka av punk og new wave, men musikken var meir forfina og forseggjort enn den reine punken. Sidan har han presentert seg i ei rad med sjangrar, mellom anna i blues og country. Han har samarbeidd med komponistar som Burt Bacharach og særleg Paul McCartney, gitt ut album saman med ei rekke kjende musikarar og produsert plater for mellom andre The Specials og The Pogues.

Costello var ei av drivkreftene for Rock Against Racism og gav ut fleire plater der han ytra skarp kritikk mot Margaret Thatcher og regjeringa ho leia, spesielt om Falklandskrigen.

Sidan desember 2003 har han vore gift med jazzmusikaren Diana Krall. Paret har to tvillinggutar saman.
