Costa byrja karrieren sin som sambamusikar i Brasil, før han flytta til USA tidleg i 1970-åra for å arbeide med den brasilianske bandleiaren Sérgio Mendes. Han har òg turnert med Diana Krall. Han har på plate spelt over 200 forskjellige instrument og har arbeidd innan mange forskjellige sjangrar, som brasiliansk, blues, kristen, country, disco, gospel, hiphop, jazz, latinamerikansk, pop, rhythm and blues, rock, soul og verdsmusikk.
