Antarktistraktaten (The Antarctic Treaty) av 1. desember 1959 er en internasjonal avtale om is- og landområdene sør for 60 grader sørlig bredde. Traktaten ble tiltrådt av tolv stater som alle hadde aktivitet i Antarktis i det Internasjonale geofysiske året (1957–58).
Statene var:
Argentina, Australia, Belgia, Chile, Frankrike, Japan, New Zealand, Norge, Sør-Afrika, Storbritannia, USA og det tidligere Sovjetunionen. Ikrafttredelse var 23. juni 1961. Traktaten er per september 2015 undertegnet av 51 land.[1]
Hovedformålet med traktaten er å sikre at Antarktis for alltid skal brukes til fredelige formål og ikke skal være åsted eller gjenstand for internasjonale konflikter. Traktaten inneholder blant annet et forbud mot militære baser i Antarktis og forbud mot kjernefysiske sprengninger og deponering av radioaktivt materiale.
I 1998 trådte Protokoll om miljøvern til Antarktistraktaten i kraft. Denne utpeker Antarktis til et naturreservat viet fred og vitenskap, og forplikter partene til et omfattende vern av miljøet i Antarktis og tilknyttede økosystemer.
Stater som har tiltrådt traktaten skal ikke gjøre noe for å hevde, støtte eller benekte territorielle krav i Antarktis, men slår også fast at statene ikke har oppgitt sine territoriale krav ved tiltredelse. For Norge gjelder dette to norske biland: Peter I Øy og Dronning Maud Land.
Det antarktiske traktatsekretariat ble etablert i 2004 for å administrere møter og koordinere samarbeidet mellom avtalepartene.
