Gramvousa (gresk: Γραμβούσα; eller Grampousa, Γραμπούσα) henviser til to små greske og ubebodde øyer utenfor kysten av nordvestlige Kreta i den regionale enheten Khaniá.[1] De har navn Imeri Gramvousa og Agria Gramvuosa. De administreres fra kommunen Kissamos. Andre eller alternative navn på øyene er Akra, Cavo Buso, Cavo Bouza, Garabusa og Grabusa.

Den ene øya, Imeri Gramvousa (gresk: Ήμερη Γραμβούσα, «tamme Gramvousa»), har levninger av en venetiansk festning, og levningene av bygninger som ble etterlatt av kretiske opprørere som var tvunget til å leve som pirater under den greske selvstendighetskrigen. I dag er øya en populær turistattraksjon.
Den andre øya, Agria Gramvuosa (gresk: Άγρια Γραμβούσα, «ville Gramvousa»), er langt mindre gjestemild og befinner seg nord for Imeri Gramvousa.
Festningen på Imeri Gramvousa ble reist i 1579 under tiden Kreta var underlagt republikken Venezia for å forsvare øya og området fra angripende osmanske tyrkere. Festningene forble på venetianske hender gjennom hele den langvarige kretiske krigen, og i fredsavtalen den 16. september 1669, som overga Kreta til osmanene, ble Gramvousa sammen med festningene i Souda og Spinalonga, værende kontrollert av Venezia.[2] Disse tre festningene forsvarte venetianske handelsruter og var også strategiske baser i påvente av en ny osmansk-venetiansk krig over Kreta.[3]
Den 6. desember 1691 under Moreakrigen (en annen osmansk-venetianske krig), forrådte kaptein de la Giocca fra Napoli venetianerne ved å overgi Gramvousa til osmanene for en sjenerøs bestikkelse. Han levde resten av sitt liv i den osmanske hovedstaden Istanbul og var velkjent under tilnavnet «kaptein Grambousas».[3] Ikke lenge etter at tyrkisk styre var begynt, begynte kretiske opprørere å samle seg på de tre kystfestningene, inkludert Gramvousa.[4]
Ved utbruddet av den greske selvstendighetskrigen (1821–1829 ble opprøret erobret av greske opprørere. I 1823 greide ikke Emmanouil Tombazis, den greske provinsregjeringens kommisjonær på Kreta, å styrke forsvaret på Gramvousa da han hadde muligheten, kort tid etter at han hadde ankommet øya.[5]
Mot sommeren 1825 reiste en gruppe på mellom 300 og 400 kretere, som hadde kjempet sammen med andre grekere på Peloponnes, til Kreta. Den 9. august 1825, ledet av Dimitrios Kallergis og Emmanouil Antoniadis, erobret gruppen, forkledd som tyrkere, festningen på Gramvousa og som de gjorde til sin base. Disse og påfølgende handlinger revitaliserte den kretiske motstandskampen mot den tyrkiske undertrykkelsen, og påbegynte den såkalte «Gramvousa-perioden».[6]
Selv om tyrkerne ikke greide å gjenerobre festningen, klarte de å blokkere opprøret til å spre seg til Kretas vestlige provinser. Opprørerne ble beleiret i Gramvousa for mer enn to år og de måtte drive piratvirksomhet for å overleve ved å overfalle passerende handelsskip. Gramvousa ble en bikube for pirataktivitet som i stor grad påvirket forholdene til tyrkiske-egyptiske og europeiske skipsfart i regionen. I løpet av perioden ble befolkningen på Gramvousa organisert og de bygget en skole[7] og en kirke. Kirken ble kalt for Panagia i Kleftrina og ble dedikert hustruene til kleptene, «tyv», en gresk betegnelse på en blanding av opprør og sjørøver.[8]
I 1828 sendte Ioannis Kapodistrias, den nye guvernøren av Hellas, Alexander Mavrocordatos sammen med britiske og franske skip til Kreta for å ta seg av piratproblemet. Denne ekspedisjonen førte til at alle piratskipene ved Gramvousa ble ødelagt og at festningen kom inn under britisk kontroll.[8] Den 5. januar 1828 gikk Hatzimichalis Dalianis på ordre fra Kapodistrias i land på Gramvousa med 700 menn.[8]
I løpet av det kretiske opprøret av 1878 var det kun festningene ved Gramvousa, Ierapetra, Spinalonga, Heraklion, Rethymnon, Izeddin, Hania, og Kissamos som ikke kunne bli erobret av opprørerne ettersom de ikke hadde nødvendig artilleri.[9]
Passende for en øy som har vært tilholdssted for pirater er det en lagune (vik) kalt for Balos lagune mellom øya og kysten av Kreta. Det er en holme som danner en del av et nes gjennom lagunen som kalles Kapp Tigani (= «stekeplate»). Nord for Balos ved Kapp Korykon ligger ruinene av den lille romerske byen Agnion fra antikken og et tempel for guden Apollon.
