Indisk film er ledende i verden med tanke på kvantitet. I 2006 ble det laget 1 091 spillefilmer[1] i landet. Fra 1950-tallet til 1990-tallet ga den indiska filmindustrien god fortjenste, noe som siden har forandret seg, som følge av økt TV-produksjon, flere utenlandske filmer og piratkopiering av film.
Indias mange språk avspeiler seg også i filmene som blir produsert. Hvert av de store indiske språkene – hindi, bengali, tamil, telugu, malayalam og kannada – har egen filmsentral. Hindi-filmene blir produsert i Mumbai, hvor filmstudioene ofte blir referert til kollektivt som Bollywood. Navnet er også overført til andre språk; tamilske filmer produseres i Kollywood i distriktet Kodambakkam i Chennai, og telugu-filmer i Tollywood. Filmer produsert på bengali kalles Tollygunge, ettersom disse filmene lenge ble produsert i distriktet Tollygunge i Kolkata.
Bollywood er størst med tanke på antall filmer og inntekter fra billettsalg, ettersom hindi er det største språket i India.
