Kringkasting (fra engelsk broadcasting) er utsendelse av lyd- og bildesignaler, spesielt radio og fjernsyn. En rekke teknologier brukes for å kringkaste slike signaler. Kringkasting utgjør en stor del av massemediene.
Kringkasting er norsk oversettelse av det engelske ordet «broadcasting». Aftenpostens Radio-Nyt utlyste i 1922 en konkurranse om et norsk navn for «broadcasting». Det kom inn flere hundre forslag. Forstavelsen kring- og rund- forekom flest ganger. Verbet var som regel -kaste eller -sprede. Aftenposten valgte selv «rundtelefonering». Dette begrepet slo ikke igjennom. «Broadcasting» ble derfor det mest vanlige i fortsatt et par år, sammen med «trådløs telefoni» og «den trådløse». I 1924 begynte telegrafdirektør Niels Stockfleth Schultz Nickelsen å bruke begrepet «kringkasting» internt i Telegrafverket.
Begrepet ble offisiell betegnelse fra 1925.
Verdens første offentlige kringkasting fant sted 13. januar 1910 da operaene Cavalleria rusticana og Pagliacci ble sendt fra Metropolitan Opera i New York.[1] Enrico Caruso opptrådte i rollen som Canio. Sendingen ble sendt via en sender på 500 watt.[2]
