Prosentpoeng eller prosentenhet brukes til å angi den absolutte endringen mellom to prosentverdier. For eksempel er en endring fra 16 prosent til 20 prosent en økning på 4 prosentpoeng. Samtidig er det en relativ økning på 25 prosent, siden 4 er 25 prosent av 16. Prosentpoeng deles videre inn i basispunkter eller basispoeng, der 100 basispunkter er 1 prosentpoeng.[1]
I sammenheng med meningsmålinger blir dette av og til omtalt feil. Man sier at oppslutningen til et parti går opp med 5 prosent når det egentlig er 5 prosentpoeng.
Det forekommer også ofte feil når det gjøres beregninger på målinger med prosent som benevning, som for eksempel vekst, avkastning eller medisinske mål som ejeksjonsfraksjon. Blant annet vil standardavviket til en slik måling ha benevnelsen prosentpoeng, men skrives ofte feilaktig med prosent. Dette er uheldig og forvirrende, siden standardavvik også kan måles i prosent av estimatet, såkalt relativt standardavvik.
Prosentpoeng forkortes på ulikt vis, som pp., p.p., pstp. eller pst.p.. Språkrådet anbefaler forkortelsen pp. - med punktum.[2]
