En sackbut eller barokktrombone er et messingblåseinstrument fra renessansen og barokken. Instrumentet er en forgjenger til den moderne trombonen.
Det finst to teorier om opphavet til navnet: At det stammer fra det franske ordet sacquer (å skyve) og bouter (å trekke), eller fra spansk sacar (å trekke) og bucha (et rør eller en pipe).[1] Sackbuten manglet vannventil slik at kondensen kunne slippe ut, den hadde et mindre bor i røret, sjalstykket var også mindre og den kunne ikke stemmes bak, ellers likner den mye på dagens trombone. Til tross for at sackbuten var en av de enkleste å stemme, da det handlet om å finne rett posisjon, ble ikke sackbuten inkludert i okesteret, og trombonen kom først med i romantikken.[2]
Sackbuten hadde tykkere vegger enn en trombones, og lyden er derfor mykere enn hos en trombone. Den hadde som funksjon å takle de dypere registrene som trompeten ikke nådde.[3]
