Sakurajima (桜島; «Kirsebærblomst-øya») er en aktiv vulkan og en tidligere øy med samme navn (nå knyttet til fastlandet) i prefekturet Kagoshima, på øya Kyushu, i Japan. Den er Japans mest aktive vulkan.[1]

Det er en stratovulkan med tre topper som er aktive: Kitadake (nordlige topp) er 1117 m.o.h.; Nakadake (sentrale topp) er 1060 m.o.h.; og Minamidake (sørlige topp) er 1040 m.o.h.. Overflaten av øya er ca. 77 km ². Fjellet ligger i en del av Kagoshima-bukta kjent som Kinkōwan. Den tidligere øya er en del av byen Kagoshima. I 1914, skjedde det et stort utbrudd, som begravde sundet med lava, og dermed koblet den tidligere øya til Osumi halvøyen, slik at Sakurajimafjellet ikke lenger er en øy.[1] Den vulkanske aktiviteten fortsetter, og kan slippe store mengder vulkansk aske på omgivelsene.
En rekke utbrudd er dokumentert siden 708 e.Kr.
Røyk steg omtrent 5000 m opp i luften, og mørkla byen Kagoshima i støv. Utbruddet medførte ingen ytterligere skader.
7. juni steg røyk og aske ca. 1000 m opp i luften over vulkanen. Ingen rapporter om skade kom inn.
