Kirken som har et 88 meter høyt tårn, ble tegnet av Johannes Otzen.[1] Kirken ble bygget i perioden 1882 til 1885, og innvielsen skjedde i 1886.
Trefoldighetskirken i Arendal er en omtrent kopi av denne kirken, og den ble tegnet av arkitekt Christian Fürst, som var elev av Johannes Otzen.
