Geraldine Chaplin este primul născut al familiei Chaplin, mama ei este Oona O’Neill, a patra soție a lui Charles Chaplin. Bunicul ei din partea mamei este Eugene O’Neill, care a fost distins cu premiul Nobel pentru literatură. Geraldine a primit o educație aleasă într-un internat privat din Geneva, Elveția. Inițial dorința ei a fost de a deveni balerină, dar după terminarea școlii din Londra, a abandonat această carieră, alegând actoria. Primul ei rol mai important, a fost în filmul Doctorul Shiwago, regizat de David Lean. Pentru rolul jucat în acest film este nominalizată în anul 1966 pentru Premiul Globul de Aur.
