Din engleza medie elefant, elefaunt, care provine din franceza veche elefant, elefan, olifant, o formă relatinizată în franceza medie elephant < latină elephantus.

Provine din greacă antică ἐλέφας (eléphas), genitivul ἐλέφαντος (eléphantos). Probabil dintr-o limbă afro-asiatică, confer proto-berberă *eḷu sau egipteană 𓍋𓃀𓅱𓌟 (ȝbw) (ābu). Înlocuise termenele olifant în engleza medie și elpend, olfend în engleza veche.
