Nepenthes (/nᵻˈpɛnθiːz/), popularly kent as tropical pitcher plants or monkey cups, is a genus o carnivorous plants in the monotypic faimily Nepenthaceae. The genus comprises roughly 140 species, an numerous naitural an mony cultivatit hybrids. Thay are maistly liana-fairmin plants o the Auld Warld tropics, rangin frae Sooth Cheenae, Indonesie, Malaysie an the Philippines; wastward tae Madagascar (twa species) an the Seychelles (ane); soothward tae Australie (three) an New Caledon (ane); an northward tae Indie (ane) an Sri Lanka (ane). The greatest diversity occurs on Borneo an Sumatra, wi mony endemic species. Mony are plants o het, humid, lawland aureas, but the majority are tropical montane plants, receivin warm days but cuil tae cauld, humid nichts year roond. A few are considered tropical alpine, wi cuil days an nichts near freezin. The name "monkey cups" refers tae the fact that monkeys hae been observed drinkin rainwatter frae these plants.
