Agave (/əˈɡɑːveɪ/[1] or /əˈɡeɪviː/[2]) is a genus o monocots. The plants are perennial, but each rosette flouers ance an then dies (see semelparity). Some species are kent bi the name century plant.[3]
In the APG III seestem, the genus is placed in the subfamily Agavoideae o the broadly circumscribed faimily Asparagaceae.[4] Some authors prefer tae place it in the segregate faimily Agavaceae. Tradeetionally, it wis circumscribed tae be componed o aboot 166 species, but it is nou uisually unnerstuid tae hae aboot 208 species.[5]
