Aleksandr Isayevich[a] Solzhenitsyn (/ˌsoʊlʒəˈniːtsɪn, ˌsɔːl-/;[2] Roushie: Алекса́ндр Иса́евич Солжени́цын, pronounced [ɐlʲɪˈksandr ɪˈsaɪvʲɪtɕ səlʐɨˈnʲitsɨn]; 11 December 1918 – 3 August 2008)[3] (eften Romanized tae Alexandr or Alexander)[4][5] wis a Roushie novelist, historian, an ootspoken creetic o the Soviet Union, especially its totalitarianism, who helped tae raise global awareness o its gulag forced labor camp seestem.
