Etymology

Gaziantep wis oreeginally cawed Aïntap (frae Arabic عين تاب) but efter some centuries the name shiftit tae Antep. The oreegin o the name is shroudit in mystery, but there are several theories:

• "Aïntap" mey be derived frae "Khantap", meanin "keeng's land" in the Hittite leid.
• "Aïntap" means "full o springs" in Persian.

In 1921, "Antep" wis legally renamed "Gaziantep", meaning "Victorious Antep".^[3]
