Leith (Scots Gaelic: Lìte); is a destrict tae the north o the ceety o Edinburgh at the mooth o the Watter o Leith.
The earliest survivin historical references are in the ryal charter authorisin the construction o Halyruid Aibey in 1128.[1][2] The medieval settlements o Leith haed growed intae a burgh bi 1833, an the burgh wis merged intae Edinburgh in 1920.[3]
Historically pairt o the coonty o Midlowden, Leith is steidit on the coast o the Firth o Forth an lies within the cooncil aurie o the Ceety o Edinburgh.
Leith became well kennt eftir Irvine Welsh screived his buik Trainspotting in 1993, but the neighboorhuid haes changed a lot sin then due tae gentrification.
The port remeens ane o its maist valuable enterprises, haundlin ower 1.5 million tonnes o cargae a year in 2003.[4]
