Weil am Rhein is locatit at 47°35′42″N 7°36′39.6″E in the destrict o Lörrach in the Federal State o Baden-Württemberg. The ceety limits border Fraunce tae the wast an Swisserland tae the sooth. The toun is first documentit in the year 786 as Willa, a name which is thocht tae be o Roman oreegin. The duc de Villars crossed the Rhine here in October 1702 tae fecht the Battle o Friedlingen durin the War o the Spainyie Succession. Weil wis severely damagit as a result o the conflict.

Agricultur dominatit local industry till the 19t century, when the ceety began tae grow, aidit bi its favourable transport connections. A railwey marshallin yard linkin Weil am Rhein tae Basel wis built in 1913. Swiss textile factories wur established in the Friedlingen quairter. 1934 saw the construction o a harbour on the Rhine.
