Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov (Russian: Алише́р Бурха́нович Усма́нов; Uzbek: Alisher Usmonov; born 9 September 1953) is an Uzbek-born Russian oligarch. As reported by Forbes in 2020, Alisher Usmanov has a net worth of $11.68 billion.[1]
Usmanov built his wealth through metal and mining operations, and investments,[2] and is the majority shareholder of Metalloinvest.[3]
He owns the Kommersant publishing house. He is also a co‑owner of Russia's second-largest mobile telephone operator, MegaFon, and co-owner of the Mail.Ru group.[4]
In 1994-1998, Usmanov, at the head of the Interbank Investment and Financial Company Interfin, collected debts for gas. In the late 1990s, Usmanov met Rem Vyakhirev; By pooling their efforts and finances, Gazprom and Interfin acquired controlling stakes in the Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant (OEMK) and the Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant, consolidating them into Gazmetall. In 2002, Usmanov's Interfin bought out Gazprom's stake in this company and became the sole controlling shareholder. In 2005, Usmanov, together with Vasily Anisimov, acquired Mikhailovsky GOK from Boris Ivanishvili. In 2006, all the mentioned assets were consolidated into Metalloinvest, Anisimov and Vladimir Skoch [5][6][7] became its co-owners together with Usmanov (to whom the shares were transferred in 1999 after his son Andrey Skoch [8][9][10] became a deputy State Duma)
