type of subdivision of New Jersey in the USA From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A borough (also spelled boro) is a type of local government in New Jersey.[1]
There are 253 boroughs in New Jersey. They are led by a mayor and a council with six people in it. The first borough was Elizabeth, which is now a city.
The Borough Act of 1878 allowed towns smaller than four square miles (10 km2) with less than 5,000 people to become a borough. This led to "boroughitis", where a large number of boroughs were made.
