fictional steam locomotive From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas the Tank Engine is a small fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher.[1] He became the most popular character in the series. He is the title character in the television spin-off series, Thomas and Friends.[2] Thomas the Tank Engine was originally intended to be a tank, but was later changed to be more appealing to children and their parents. Thomas was also named after Thomas Hobbes, an English philosopher, who had interests in political philosophy, similar to Thomas the Tank Engine. Thomas has become an icon in the children's media industry, being recognized in England in America, mainly because of his appearance as a talking blue tank engine.
